Additional Information

Fibromygia literally means “muscle fiber pain”. Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis that is ambiguous, questionable and for the most part, a mystery. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, “The optimal management of Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is unclear and comprehensive evidence-based guidelines have not been reported.” The Journal goes on to state: “There are major limitations to the FMS literature, with many treatment trials compromised by short duration. There are no medical therapies that have been specifically approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for management of FMS.”

The reality is that there are some real symptoms being felt and no actually data to support a scientific answer. Science doesn't have all the answers. FMS is reaching epidemic proportions in our culture and primarily present in women.

Most, if not all of these women tend to also share some, if not all of the following medical history complaints or experiences: extended use of antibiotics, hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptive therapy, steroid or corticosteroid use (usually for the treatment of bronchitis or asthma (ie. inhalers), fatigue, guilt, depression, a traumatic emotional event prior to the onset of the symptoms, fear, to name a few common symptoms.

A multifaceted approach is shown to be the best course of treatment. Such an approach addresses musculoskeletal function, posture, emotional well being, stress, nutrition and overall balance. At Optimal Health Group we provide evaluations and treatments in the fields of Chiropractic care, Neuromuscular therapy and other massage techniques, personal training, yoga classes, mobilization and strength classes, nutrition support and medical care. We are proud to ally with University Family Medicine in order to provide the most well-rounded and balanced care in Rhode Island.

As is the case with many chronic conditions, there is most likely an underlying mind-body connection, meaning that there are emotional, personal and spiritual components of a crisis or illness just as there are physical. Have you ever wondered if the emotions you hold on to (like fear, anger and grief) create your physical symptoms?
